Research Changes Futures.
Behind every scientific question is a person waiting for better answers.
The Mission We Pursue
To accelerate discoveries in Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia by supporting pioneering research into disease mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapies that improve patients' lives today and change outcomes for the future.
Why We Exist
Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia affect far more than movement or memory. They change independence, relationships, plans, and everyday life—not only for those diagnosed but also for their families and care partners.
A Life-Changing Impact
Despite major scientific progress, many fundamental questions remain unanswered. We still need to understand why these diseases begin, why they progress differently from one person to another, and how they can be detected and treated earlier. And most importantly, we need to stop them.
We believe that research can provide these answers.
From Discovery to Better Lives
We support key experiments and international collaboration that turn scientific insight into earlier diagnosis and more effective therapies.
Understand
We fund research into how Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia begin and progress, with a particular focus on the earliest, prodromal stages.
Detect
We support biomarkers and diagnostic tools that can identify disease before motor symptoms emerge or dementia develops.
Intervene
We advance therapeutic strategies designed to slow or stop disease at the earliest possible stage—before irreversible damage occurs.
Advancing Science Without Borders
Breakthroughs happen when outstanding ideas, expertise, and people come together. American Friends of ParkinsonFonds Deutschland supports pioneering research projects and enables scientists at different stages of their careers to gain experience at internationally renowned research institutions.
Uniting Expertise Across Borders
By connecting researchers, disciplines, and institutions across borders, we aim to accelerate the exchange of knowledge, strengthen the next generation of scientists, and move promising discoveries closer to patients.
How We Advance Our Mission
-
Supporting Pioneering Research
We fund ambitious projects addressing important unanswered questions in Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia.
-
Developing Scientific Talent
We support research fellowships for both early-career and established scientists, enabling them to acquire new expertise and build lasting international collaborations.
-
Connecting People and Ideas
We bring together researchers, clinicians, patients, families, and supporters who share a commitment to changing the future of these diseases.
-
Keeping Patients at the Center
Scientific progress matters most when it improves diagnosis, treatment, independence, and quality of life for people living with Parkinson's disease or Lewy body dementia.

Our Vision
A future in which Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia no longer determine the course of a person’s life.
Research has the power to turn uncertainty into understanding and understanding into meaningful change. With the support of our community, we can help exceptional scientists pursue bold ideas and create progress that reaches patients and families.
